The Ukrainian Museum of Canada is happy to present an online concert as part of our upcoming exhibition, Shevchenkomania! We invite you to experience the music of Gordiy Starukh, a Ukrainian musician and lira or hurdy-gurdy-maker based in L’viv. Hosted by Serhij Koroliuk, this Zoom concert will provide an opportunity to enjoy Gordiy’s work and learn more about his practice.
Gordiy’s performances combine the distinct sound of the hurdy-gurdy or lira, modern electronic elements, and Ukrainian folklore. His music bridges past and present, offering a fresh interpretation of the traditional Ukrainian culture that inspired Taras Shevchenko. Join us as we celebrate the richness of Ukrainian culture through the artistry of Gordiy Starukh and the enduring legacy of Taras Shevchenko.
About Gordiy Starukh:
Jack-of-all-trades is a good description for Gordiy Starukh. Not only does he create fantastic hurdy-gurdy instruments according to old Ukrainian traditional techniques, but he performs on them to popularize both the long-forgotten craft and the sound this instrument can produce. Gordiy is a rockstar, in the literal sense of the word. His videos on YouTube gather hundreds of thousands of views, he is a popular artist in Ukraine. Opening a hurdy-gurdy workshop in 2011 in Lviv, Gordiy has created numerous instruments ever since. Appealing to an international clientele, his work is both traditional and bespoke, no instrument is ever the same. Starukh’s hurdy-gurdies are brilliantly made with every element meticulously handcrafted to achieve sound perfection.
