Lecture: Discover Saskachewanshchyna with Karen Pidskalny

Join us for an insightful evening with Karen Pidskalny, the museum’s Head of Education, as she explores Ukrainian Canadian identity. A second-generation Ukrainian Canadian who grew up on a farm in Prud’homme, Saskatchewan, Karen’s passion for storytelling and oral histories began with her family and friends on the farm and continues today.

Karen will share personal stories from her experience growing up Ukrainian Canadian in Saskatchewan, along with those passed down through generations. Her talk, tied to the concept of “Saskachewanshchyna,” will delve into ancestral memory and the balance between cultural preservation and adaptation.

Saskachewanshchyna embraces the duality of being Canadian while maintaining a distinct Ukrainian identity. The resilience and ability to adapt while preserving rich traditions, culture, and heritage are ingrained in Ukrainian Canadian life. Karen will discuss the importance of honouring ancestral legacies while embracing new traditions and understandings.
