In 2023-24, just 1.2% of the $1 trillion government budget went to culture, totaling $13 billion, according to Hill Strategies. This was among the smallest spending categories, ahead of only
recreation and religion ($10.5 billion). Spending in other categories was several times larger, including economic affairs received $109 billion, social protection $281 billion, and public order and safety $54 billion.
