This volunteer position for Environment Naturalist Coordinator or BioBlitz leader for the City Nature Challenge CNC YXE taking place between April 29 - May 2 combines event organisation.with an environmental specialty such as a skilled Taxonomic specialist, scientist, college student, master naturalists, biologist, or ecologist, or recognized amateur expert naturalist such as butterfly expert, plant expert, or inaturalist enthusiasts. Help to put Saskatoon and Area on the World Stage in this fun competition!



A BioBlitz is an arranged meet up date and time to encourage as many people as possible (within COVID guidelines) outside to document biodiversity through the iNaturalist app on their individual smart phones.



If you are a naturalist specialist, scientist or expert who would love to document the biodiversity of Saskatoon and surrounding area, this is for you!



Training is provided. It is necessary to have access to a smart phone. The BioBlitz event will utilize the free iNaturalist app. Many naturalists have their own equipment to assist your observations in the field, and what they are the most comfortable with. Volunteer Citizen Scientists will come with their own Smart Phone. Webinar training will be provided to anyone wanting to best learn some great hints and tips to enhance the iNaturalist experience.



The applicant should be interested in promoting the BioBlitz date and time, and to encourage citizen scientist participants to use iNaturalist to document evidence of living organisms such as feathers, nests, fur, tracks, scat, shells, or photos or sound recordings of birds, plants, animals, insects, mushrooms, and any living organism between April 29 and May 2, 2022 for the Saskatoon and Area City Nature Challenge.



Taxon Inventory Coordinators/Scientist co-leaders (Members of CNC YXE City Nature Challenge Bioblitz Steering Committee)

Assisting in locating and finding Taxon Coordinators in various fields
Site selection – work with the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas as to which are the pre-identified local City greenspaces, and greenspaces in the surrounding areas which have been identified as suitable for locating the most wild or native taxa
Choose your own date and time to arrange a meet up event between April 29 - May 2
The only taxon specimen collecting will be the occasional mushroom to create spore prints as deemed necessary, otherwise all field study will be done through the iNaturalist app as photos or sound recordings. Cameras can be used, and the images uploaded to iNaturalist via computer.
A skilled Taxonomic specialist, biologist, or ecologist, or recognized amateur expert naturalist may wish to further identify the iNaturalist observations for Saskatoon and Area CNC between May 3-May 8 We will host iNaturalist identification webinars which prove to be lots of fun!
iNaturalist does use the power of image recognition technology to identify the plants and animals encouraging anyone to take part.

GOALS

Saskatoon AND area CNC YXE will compete for the title of the most Biodiverse City. The goals are to engage the public in the collection of biodiversity data, with three awards each year for the cities and areas that makes the most observations, find the most species, and engage the most people. iNaturalist is as easy as 1-2-3, to encourage everyone to take part. Whether you’re an avid naturalist or a dog walker, everyone can participate: it’s easy, fun, and will encourage you to get outdoors.
