About Us
The Ukrainian Museum of Canada is North America’s oldest Ukrainian museum, housing the largest collection of Ukrainian textiles, artefacts, and fine art on the continent. Our mission is to celebrate and preserve the history, culture, and contributions of Ukrainians in Canada and the diaspora.

We are seeking a dedicated Collections Assistant to join our team for a three-month period. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about cultural heritage and museum work, with an eye for detail and strong organizational skills.

Position Overview
The Collections Assistant will assist the Museum's Collections and Digital Assets Officer in updating and maintaining the Museum’s extensive collection. This includes cataloguing, condition reporting, storage optimization, and assisting with research and documentation tasks.

Key Responsibilities
• Acquisitions and Accessions: Assist in bringing new items into the collection by communicating with donors and completing associated paperwork.
• Cataloguing: Complete descriptive cataloguing of artefacts, including objects, textiles, and artwork.
• Data Entry: Input cataloguing information and photographs into the Museum’s online collections management system (CMS).
• Condition Reporting: Inspect artefacts and fill out condition reports, ensuring detailed documentation and long-term preservation.
• Storage and Organization: Safely store artefacts with protective measures and reorganize current storage systems to optimize access and retrieval.
• Digitization Support: Scan, photograph, and transcribe artefacts and related documents for the Museum’s repositories.
• Research Assistance: Conduct research on artefacts to establish provenance and historical value.
• General Support: Help maintain collections storage areas, ensuring a clean and safe environment.
• Team Collaboration: Work closely with staff and volunteers to achieve project goals.

Qualifications and Skills
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to take initiative and stay motivated with projects
• Experience with data entry, descriptive cataloguing, or collections management (an asset)
• Interest in cultural heritage, history, or museum studies
• Ability to handle artefacts carefully and follow preservation guidelines
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (SharePoint, Word, OneDrive, etc.)
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications
• Previous experience in a museum or archival setting
• Familiarity with Ukrainian culture or language (an asset, not required)

Eligibility Requirements
• This position is funded through the Young Canada Works (YCW) program. To be eligible, candidates must:
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada
• Be between the ages of 16 and 30 at the start of employment
• Be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory
• Commit to working full-time for the duration of the position
• Intend to return to full-time studies in the next academic semester
• Not have another full-time job (over 30 hours per week) while employed in this position

Working Conditions
• Light physical activity, such as lifting and moving artefacts and storage boxes
• Work will primarily take place on-site in the museum’s collections storage and workspace
