Director of Advancement

Core Function:
The Director of Advancement provides strategic leadership and day-to-day management of the Advancement Division (Marketing, Communications, and Development functions). This position will extend the reach and impact of the museum brand, connect with communities, grow revenues and impact our audiences. The position is responsible for meeting annual fundraising goals and for executing a development plan, which meets the ongoing strategic, operational and capital needs of the Remai Modern

Scope and Major Responsibilities:

Manages assigned staff, hires, assigns work schedules, plans for future workforce needs and directs the preparation of divisional strategic business planning and annual budgets. Plans, organizes, directs, monitors and evaluates the work of staff and disciplinary action when required.
Establish Division strategy, priorities, financial allocations, and desired outcomes consistent with the Strategic Plan and Business Plan.
Oversee all external communications, digital, print and signage, etc., and oversee all-staff communications, including internal SharePoint site.
Oversees the strategic deployment of departmental resources to maximize impacts for the museum.
Ensures compliance with legislation, regulations, standards, guidelines, policies, procedures and collective agreements as appropriate. Leads a culture of Health & Safety that promotes the well-being of employees and the general public in accordance with applicable legislation and departmental procedures.
Prepares and controls the annual Division Operating budget, and Business Plan, manages expenditures, and ensures they are aligned with Remai Modern’s policies, procedures and Strategic Plan.
Implements and oversees:
Brand alignment and editorial direction on all gallery materials
The relationship, contracts and deliverables from consulting firms on marketing, branding, advertising, media, and public relations;
Market research, analyzing data and web analytics to determine and inform the Museum’s marketing, communications and public relations strategies. Conduct thorough analysis of marketing ROI and successfully develop cost-effective solutions;
Development and execution of marketing initiatives, communications, events, and campaigns that elevate the Remai Modern brand;
The extension and maintenance of the organization’s digital footprint, while effectively utilizing search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), and digital advertising
7. Cultivates and builds relationships with members of the media and press and directs Communications staff in building media interest in the gallery. Ensures regular contact with target media and timely and appropriate responses to media requests.

8. Assists with preparation of media/press briefings, speeches, presentations and talking points.

9. Participates in the development of a comprehensive fundraising plan and implements that plan to meet the future and ongoing strategic, capital and operational needs.

10. Develops and leads the execution of a comprehensive stewardship strategy to engage, inspire and secure annual and multi-year donors and sponsors, locally, nationally and internationally.

11. Develops major gifts and individual and planned giving programmes and solicits and secures donors to support the gallery through major gifts, bequests and other planned giving vehicles in cooperation with the Remai Modern Foundation.

12. Implements and ensures delivery of other fundraising strategies for the plan, including fundraising and donor recognition events.

14. Prepares written and oral reports for Board of Directors and Senior Leadership. Represents the Museum, and Department, with the public, media, external partners and clients.

15. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

· Degree in marketing, commerce, business, journalism or public relations.

· Seven to nine years’ progressively responsible related experience including 3 years’ experience directly leading and growing a team at the senior leadership level.

· Possession of a professional designation preferred.

· Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered

· Ability to think strategically and creatively.

· Knowledge and passion for the modern and contemporary art, culture, and tourism as well as knowledge of public sector and non-profit organizational operations

· Demonstrated ability to raise funds through gift solicitation, corporate sponsorship and grant writing.

· Demonstrated ability in analyzing data and research to inform decision-making and track impacts

· Ability to build and foster effective relationships.

· Demonstrated ability to plan, direct, coordinate, monitor and evaluate the work of professional and technical staff.

· Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and consultation through problem-solving, consensus, stakeholder involvement and dialogue.

· Demonstrated ability to express ideas and concepts effectively, orally and writing, including the ability to prepare and present oral and written and audio-visual reports of a specialized nature and the ability to create a persuasive case to garner support for key programs and projects.

· Ability to work with highly confidential and sensitive information, exercising sound judgement to make decisions in complex and confidential situations, behaving at all times with tact, integrity and diplomacy.

· Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality and comply with the AFP Code of Ethical Standards and Donor Bill of Rights.

· Knowledge of public sector, non-profit organizational operations and related governmental relationships

· Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting, budgeting and financial procedures.
