ABOUT GTNT:
Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre (GTNT) is an award-winning, professional Indigenous theatre company and registered charity based in Saskatoon that has been operating since 1999. It is the artistic responsibility of our company to incorporate Indigenous culture, language, and history into all aspects of our theatre practice. Every GTNT production, co-production, and presentation aims to increase the involvement of local, provincial, and national Indigenous talent.
GTNT’s vision is to develop and maintain a working Indigenous theatre community in Saskatchewan composed of aspiring, emerging, and established artists, while increasing intercultural understanding in Saskatoon and communities within Saskatchewan.
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Artistic Director (AD) is responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing GTNT’s artistic vision and theatre season programming. As an organizational leader, the Artistic Director works to grow and strengthen the company’s artistic impact and presence in the community including relationship building within and outside of the arts. The Artistic Director executes major decisions about the ongoing development of the company’s aesthetic values and activities’ working to ensure the artistic vision is aligned to the mission, vision, and values of GTNT. The AD further works in collaboration with the General Manager, fellow staff, and theatre colleagues from the community and ensures emphasis on sharing Indigenous stories relevant to Treaty Six Territory and the homeland of the Métis. The AD reports directly to the GTNT board of directors and works within the parameters of GTNT’s executive policies.
PRIMARY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Conceive, develop, and implement the artistic vision and focus of the theatre, consistent with our mission ensuring the pursuit of artistic excellence in the development of diverse Indigenous works;
● Produce an annual Indigenous theatre season and other theatre experiences that serve our mission;
● Assesses innovative and new Indigenous theatre / artistic content and maintains an awareness of new scripts, emergent talent, and artistic works with primarily Indigenous content; develops, implements, and evaluates productions / programs for the year;
● Provides support for emerging Indigenous artists through GTNT Circle of Voices programing and mentorship activities encouraging cultural integrity through artistic forms;
● Collaborate with organizations within and outside the arts community in support of intercultural projects which provoke dialogue and challenge the borders that divide us;
● Fosters the development of good relations and collaborate with organizations within and outside the arts community in support of advanced cultural understanding by participating in meetings and joint activities where appropriate;
● Maintains strong connections and relationships with knowledge keepers and seeks the guidance of local cultural supports in consideration of Indigenous content;
● Acts as a spokesperson for the organization's artistic purpose via speaking engagements, public and social appearances, and, as requested, at fundraising events and schools;
● Negotiates, hires and manages production staff, monitors and enforces contracts for production teams, and along with administration team adhere to Actors' Equity guides;
● initiates negotiation of Actors' Equity and performance rights contracts;
● Alongside the production team, makes artistic assignments within and outside of GTNT staff and supports the contracting, scheduling and supervision of artists for shows. The AD typically directs at least one production per season;
● Alongside the production team, approves sets, costumes, sound and lighting, technical supports and properties and arranges their creation in the delivery of productions;
● Is responsible for the artistic content of grant applications, and related reporting for GTNT operations, programs and productions;
● Alongside the General Manager, grows the theatre's contributions to our wider Saskatchewan community; this includes monitoring and meeting the annual production/ programming schedules and budgets;
● Alongside the General Manager and Board, works to achieve goals and GTNT Strategic Plans; and
● Reports to the Board of Directors on a regular basis to give an update on artistic activity at Board Meetings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
● Results oriented leader who has a demonstrably strong track record in directing and/or producing theatre, with a focus on Indigenous performing arts;
● Strong team player who leads and inspires colleagues / working teams to work in collaboration towards organizational / project goals;
● Strong ability to foster an optimum working environment which advances creativity while meeting production / project goals;
● Ability to proactively identify and prioritizes key issues involved and undertakes/ facilitates sound organization decision-making;
● Ability to respond to change with a positive attitude and inspires others towards making adjustments necessary to accomplish work / project activities and goals;
● Knowledge of First Nations, and Métis customs and protocols with an awareness of First Nations and Métis languages in Treaty 6 Territory and the homeland of the Métis;
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills in a range of professional contexts; and
● Comprehensive knowledge of the current theatre scene and excellent sectoral awareness.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
● Demonstrable knowledge of marketing and audience development;
● Strong knowledge and understanding of the theatre industry and arts funding;
● Highly self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
● A deep passion for theatre and the creative process;
● A strong ability and desire to mentor and teach others;
● Dynamic and engaging personality with exceptional interpersonal skills, able to quickly develop rapport and build and maintain productive relationships with donors, audiences, colleagues, volunteers and the performing arts community;
● Computer skills, capable of utilizing the technology and tools needed to compile reports, budgets, and effectively manage productions Windows 10;
● Willing to adjust to various project timelines and work a flexible schedule (evenings and weekends);
● Ability to delegate, negotiate, resolve conflict, be responsive to others, and manage performance; and
● CPIC , Drivers abstract, First AID , CPR certifications.
