Established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, International Museum Day serves as a day to raise awareness about the roles museums play in cultural exchange and the enrichment of understanding between various cultures and peoples. A new theme is chosen by ICOM each year for museums to plan events around to celebrate the day.
