International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

Adopted by the United Nations in 1994, August 9 marks the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigeous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. The day serves as a day of awareness for the protection and preservation of Indigenous languages, cultures, and traditions and the work to be done on achieving the ends of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
