International Day for the Elimination of Racism and Racial Discrimination

Marking the day in 1960 when South African police in Sharpeville opened fire on a crowd of peaceful demonstrators protesting apartheid laws, killing sixty-nine, March 21 is observed internationally as a day to make progress in the fight against racism and raise awareness to issues of inequality and racial discrimination around the world.
