Tracey-Mae Chambers at Kronau Heritage Museum

The 2024 summer exhibit at the Kronau Heritage Museum highlights the connection between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations by hosting Ontario born Métis artist Tracey-Mae Chambers to display her ongoing project, titled #hopeandhealingcanada. The exhibit will be installed on July 2nd, 2024 and will be available for public viewing until September. This captivating showcase, along with its accompanying exhibit about Métis history and culture, allows visitors a unique experience to engage with the intertwined narratives of resilience and cultural heritage.

Tracey-Mae Chambers is a Métis installation artist and a member of the Métis Nation of Ontario. She has traveled across Canada creating site specific installations at residential school historical sites, cultural centres, museums, art galleries and other public spaces. Chambers often places installations at public spaces that have a widely colonial viewpoint, urging viewers and staff to recognise that the arrival of settlers also marked the displacement of many Indigenous communities. The Kronau Heritage Museum exhibit will feature her pieces of large premade crochet and knit components all in red yarn, exclusive to the museum’s setting and architecture.

The goal of Chambers’ work is to broach the subject of decolonization and bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Chambers’ art ignites and maintains conversations about reconciliation and decolonization, and encourages relationships based on mutual understanding and respect, which are essential to the reconciliation process. This installation promises to be a thought-provoking experience with an approaching facade.

The Kronau Heritage Museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing stories that enrich our understanding of the past in a contemporary context. Through interactive exhibits and programming, the museum engages individuals of all ages and guides viewers in a celebration of local heritage. The institution serves as a cornerstone of the community and a place of gathering and is dedicated to providing a welcoming environment to spark and nurture essential cultural discussions.
